Quality Of Care At Dialysis

Posted by michaelnewman at 05:06 PM on June 06, 2009

Today was a first for me.  I actulally had the supervisory nurse wanting me to take myself off of dialysis when she knows that my hands are too painful to do that.

I think she could be classified as a potential moron!!!

Screaming at me while I was in severe pain didn't help much either.

The day before at this same clinic in Pensacola another nurse gave me an entire litre of saline, and then blamed it on me telling his boss that I told him to do it.

I then had so much fluid on I had to stay for another hour to get the fluid overload off.

Then there was the time I was screaming in pain from cramping.  There was a tech not more than four feet from me entering information on the computer.  He refused to come over to help.  Later he told his boss that he was in the process of pulling needles out of a patients arm.  A total fabrication on his part.

This is a very dangerous clinic to be doing dialysis in.

I have now moved to a different clinic due to the very poor "Quality of Care" at my previous clinic. It is so sad to think that patients have to fear being dialized at this particular clinic due to alleged patient abuse.

Quality of patient care should be the priority at the clinic.

In the new clinic they are very attentive to the patient's needs. This is a marked difference from my previous clinic. They are also very "infection consious" and do whatever they can to guard against it.

Dialysis is about the comfort of the patient, and not a matter of convienience for the staff at the dialysis clinic. It is unfortunate that for the most part that does not happen.

I used my new "graft" for the first time yesterday and it worked flawlessly.

I am happy with the performance of the staff at my new clinic.

Never ever let someone with little experience put a dialysis needle into your arm!

The head nurse at the Pensacola clinic needs to be re-trained, and sent to classes on how to deal with patients. She has no idea on how to be effective when dealing with dialysis patients.

Infection control needs to be a priority at the Pensacola Dialysis clinic.

I have found that the only way to correct problems, and improve the quality of care at my dialysis center is to be persistant in reporting problems that have the potential of harming patients.

The reporting of problems lacks the authority to correct them. Only when a patient dies does corrective action take place, or at least looked into.

Michael,
I just read your post, and I'm stunned. First off, I need to get my thoughts together, because if I was ever in a situation like you were in, I would behave much worse and half the time I am a bad patient because I have been doing this my whole life. I have seen the good the bad, the best and the very worst. But what I do know, and I promise you this, if you pray to God about what is going on at dialysis, I mean sincerely pray to God and let him take over, and you step back and watch, I guarantee that you will see a change or something better happen for you. The trick is, you have to let God take care of it, and that means talking to him, praying to him, that no matter how bad of a job that place is doing, and I know it is hard, but bite your tongue and let God handle it. I guarantee it will work out. That's how much faith I have in God and to let him handle it.

I am not saying that you are not going to have problems in the future, but that's unrealistic to worry about because there will always be problems. But if you have God on your team you will always be able to handle it, because he takes care of it. (http://bobkat316.blogspot.com/)

What you said is very true. I only wish I had the faith that you do. I will continue to pray, and can only hope things will change for the best. I hope this post finds you feeling well. Best regards!!

The quality of care at dialysis has not improved at all from previous weeks.

As long as you can stay on top of it the clinical environment can be a positive experience. It is only when short staffed that things go wrong, and patients suffer. November 18, 2009 - 3:P02pm - CST

Medicare Fraud By DaVita and Fresenius?

As reported in the Beaumont Enterprise this morning, a former regional sales manager for Amgen, Inc., has filed a lawsuit in Beaumont federal court, alleging that salesmen dictated dosages of Epogen to increase the bottom line of pharmaceutical maker.

From the report:

"According to the suit filed in a Beaumont federal court, salesmen worked in cahoots with dialysis clinics nationwide to pump the maximum amount of the drug Epogen into the bloodstreams of terminally ill patients - an amount just below the threshold that would raise the suspicion of Medicare auditors.

Woodard, who now works as a nurse practitioner in Tennessee, has filed a False Claims Act case. In such a lawsuit, a person files on behalf of the federal government, but the government does not have to intervene in the case.

He accuses Davita Inc. and Fresenius Medical Care, the nation's two leading dialysis clinic companies, of prescribing excessive doses of Epogen in order to bilk the government out of millions of dollars."

A lawyer for Davita said Woodard's charges are "without merit"

Today I was dropped from my pulmonay group due to a nurse that lied about something I said, and also lied about a referal from my nephrologist. Three weeks ago she misquoted a message I left on her answering maching. Lucky for me I recorded the message I left, and when she called back she lied about what I said to her. So I called her a .liar. Weeks we nt by, and still no appointment from the pulmonolgists office not even when my nephrolgists office FAXed an oder for an appointment to them. The office administrator quoted to me exaxtly the lie the nurse told him. Is he gloing to be in for a surprise when he gets a copy of the FAX that was sent to their group by the doctor. I think that he will then see that his nurse ia a liar. I will hjave her license for this as she has delayed my getting the water out of my abdominal cavity for weeks now, and my breathikng is getting worse because of it when the water pushes up on my right lung..

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a difficult time. I hope you can get the care you need soon, either from this physician or a different one. It is good that you have actual evidence to show that the nurse is a liar. So often, patients get railroaded by someone like that and no one believes them. Good luck with it all.
