CHAPTER 5 - "How To Clear Your Debts Without Filing Bankruptcy"

Using sample letter #6 as an example, write them a letter explaining your dire financial situation and that you don't want to be called about the debt, and then -- Do Nothing!  Typically after 90 days the credit card company will "charge off" the debt.  This is because it is not "cost Effective" for them to chase after you for the money.  They are cutting their losses.

Letter #6 cites the law that prevents them from calling you.  They are allowed to send you a letter telling you what further action they plan to take if any.

Letter 1-3 will stop creditors from having further contact with you.  This will give you a lot of breathing space when payments are due.

"Zombie" debts are those that are uncollectable.  After Ten years they do not have to be repaid, however there are exceptions such as the IRS, student loans, and secured debts such as a mortgage.  All of this covered in the 2nd addition of my book.

Don't use motgage modification company's that require you to give them cash up front.  If they fail to get your mortgage modified you are out the money not them.  It is a win, win for them only.

Remember, bill collectors try to collect from yout through intimidation.  If you don't let them intimidate you they lose not you!

Recently I called our cable TV provider to terminate service with them.  After speaking with five different customer service people, and getting five different answers, I decided to take control of the process, and tell them what they were going to do to make my life easier.  I wrote a letter to them that should take care of the problem, and if nothing else will confuse them.  The answer I get from the cable company should be interesting to say the least, and I'm sure my last payment owed to them will go away when they find out that they actually owe me money.

Recently I received a payment receipt from my supplemental insurance carrier that showed a payment to a doctor I have never heard of.  Make sure you always go over who your insurance company is making payments to.  You will be surprised at how many times insurance company's pay the wrong provider.

If your car is going to be repo'd try to make sure you can keep it in a garage, or try to get a secure locking device.  Failing to be able to do either one of those things make sure you at least have bus fare, or taxi money in order to get to where you need to go.
